Foster’s Commercials

The Foster’s commercials from the late 2010 advertising campaign are brilliant and hilarious! It’s a series of commercials of men calling into Foster’s hotline on the beach, asking two Australian Fosters’s beer drinkers for advise on relationships, everything from, “Will my girlfriend look like her mother when she’s older?”to “Should I get her named tattooed?”These thirty second clips effectively sell the beer without coming across as overtly stupid. The very idea of men asking for dating advise from two guys who appear to be sitting in a shack on the beach, eating grilled food and drinking beer all day sends a message that this beer is a gateway to the good life, to fun and relaxation.

Continuing on the theme of guys asking other guys for advise, the commercials appear to suggest that guys who are smart enough to choose good beer are generally smarter in other areas in life, specifically relationships. It’s funny, really. Whether or not this rings true in real life, it gets the message across that drinking Foster’s is both manly and cool, and will enable you to have fun. It suggests a spring break beer, or a summertime beverage, though obviously it’s designed to make you think of the product year round. It just plain works.

My favorite commercial has got to be the man phoning about his brother’s friend who invades the personal space of everyone he speaks to. Were it not for the barbecue-obsessed Foster’s guys, this dude would be in trouble. Nobody likes a space invader or a guy who hasn’t learned to say it, don’t spray it. Once again, our Foster’s guys come to the rescue.

There may be a certain degree of pointlessness to this series of advertisements, but it’s obvious that it’s intentional. The point is to sell the beer, and to emphasize manliness and fun. For these main reasons, these commercials work on levels that the original writers probably did not even intend. Nevertheless, it’s more money in Foster’s pockets and a good method of spreading the brand awareness that is Foster’s beer. I get a chuckle every time I see one of these witty commercials. Fost good call!
